WHAT DOES FREEDOM OF PRESS MEAN?
- It means that the press has the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship by the government.
LEVESON INQUIRY:
- News Of The World printing extremely unethical and personal stories relating to celebrities and innocent people.
- This carried on for quite a while, until 1 newspaper leaked who was getting this information and a court case was made.
- The Leveson inquiry was made in order to prevent these issues occurring again, "wreaking havoc among many lives".
- The owner was given prison time.
- Huge impact on the news industry as it affected all companies.
IPSO:
- Biased and unfair, allowing the big newspaper companies to bully and intrude.
- It is controlled by the newspapers it regulates, making it hypocritical.
- They claim their news is new and follows the Leveson inquiry.
OFCOM:
- Regulates television and radio.
- Regulates the TV news, they have a responsibility to ensure the news that is being broadcasted does not create mass hysteria and protects the public.
- They get criticism for having a large salary but not very flexible.
